To call someone 努力 (nǔlì) is a compliment, acknowledging their hard work and dedication. However, just a slight shift in tone, and you might accidentally call them a slave (núlì). Of course, someone will most likely know what you mean if you make this error. But, it’s better to strive for being correct and clear, regardless!
